Oestrogen is an important sex hormone that regulates the growth, development, and physiology of the human reproductive system. In addition, oestrogen also influences neuroendocrine, skeletal, adipose, and cardiovascular systems. Oestrogen is produced primarily by the ovaries in females and testes in males.
Oestrogen levels decrease with age, and to counterbalance this, the female body produces higher levels of FSH in an attempt to stimulate the ovaries to produce a healthy egg. An elevated FSH level in midstream urine can help you detect early perimenopause, menopause, and even PCOS or ovarian failure in some cases.
Persistently high levels of FSH can also indicate PCOS or premature ovarian failure however a diagnosis should not be based on the results of one single test and further medical investigation should be sought.
