Pumpkin’s Taken Over the Coffee Shop. Your Stomach Would Like a Word.

A pumpkin-spiced iced coffee, small pumpkin, muffin, pumpkin seeds and cinnamon on a café table.

One minute you’re ordering your usual coffee. The next, the menu’s turned orange and pumpkin has somehow got into everything.

Lattes. Muffins. Cookies. Probably a loyalty card.

You join in, because it smells lovely and apparently autumn now comes with whipped cream. But an hour later, your jeans feel a little less forgiving.

So, has pumpkin betrayed you? Or has it been left holding the bill for everyone else in the cup?

From doorstep decoration to drinks-menu celebrity

Pumpkin used to have a fairly straightforward seasonal job: sit on the doorstep, look mildly threatening and try not to collapse before Halloween.

Now it has a coffee-shop career, a bakery range and considerably better publicity than most vegetables.

But “pumpkin spice” is a flavour description, not a complete ingredient list. The name alone doesn’t tell you how much pumpkin is involved—or what else has joined the party.

A pumpkin-spiced latte isn’t a pumpkin with a straw in it.

There’s quite an entourage in that cup

There’s the coffee. The milk. The sauce. The topping. Any extras you fancied at the till. And possibly the muffin you ordered because, well, you were already there.

That’s a lot of ingredients for pumpkin to take all the blame.

Starbucks’ UK autumn ingredient guide, for example, lists milk, espresso, pumpkin spice sauce and a spice topping in its standard iced pumpkin latte. Compare that with a tin of LIBBY’S 100% Pure Pumpkin, whose ingredient list is simply pumpkin.

Same orange celebrity. Very different supporting cast.

That doesn’t tell you which ingredient, if any, is behind your discomfort. It does mean that feeling uncomfortable after a pumpkin latte isn’t automatically a verdict on pumpkin itself.

What if pumpkin keeps coming up?

If pumpkin-containing foods seem to leave you feeling uncomfortable, you’ll be interested to know that both pumpkin and pumpkin seeds are included in our Optimum Sensitivity Test’s item list.

Pumpkin has made it onto our list as well as your coffee-shop menu.

The milk swap isn’t the whole plot

You order your favourite milk alternative and feel impressively organised. Then comes the sauce, the topping and the cheerful “Would you like anything else?”

A milk swap changes the milk. It doesn’t tell you what’s in everything else.

There’s no need to conduct a full interrogation at the counter. Ask where to find the ingredients for your actual order, including the extras. Use your local café’s information: recipes can differ between countries.

If you have a known allergy, check the complete order with staff using their allergen information.

And yes, the muffin still counts. Even if you ate it before the coffee arrived.

Pumpkin soup would also like a lawyer

It isn’t just the drinks menu. “Pumpkin soup” sounds like a wonderfully simple arrangement until you meet the stock, cream, onion, garlic and whatever delicious finishing touch went into your particular recipe.

Pumpkin pie has an entire pastry department involved.

Even a handful of pumpkin seeds is a different food from a spiced drink with a mountain of whipped cream. They share a name, but they’re hardly the same order.

Before declaring war on every orange vegetable, look beyond the name on the menu. If discomfort keeps returning, discuss it with a healthcare professional rather than simply crossing more foods off your shopping list.

Not autumn where you are? Pumpkin hasn’t checked either

For readers in Australia and New Zealand, all this autumn chatter may arrive just as you’re heading into spring.

You’re still invited. Pumpkin soup, roasted pumpkin and pumpkin seeds don’t require falling leaves or a chunky scarf. The same ingredient-checking approach works whenever they’re on your plate.

Enjoy the seasonal excitement. Admire the orange menu boards. Order the drink if it suits you.

Just remember: pumpkin may be the headline act, but it rarely travels alone.
